Automotive Supplier Reshores Embedded Systems Engineering Capability

EASi creates an embedded systems lab and dedicates an expert practices team to perform software architecture and design, to help an auto supplier succeed in its newly reshored project.

The client and challenge
The customer, a developer and manufacturer of automotive and transportation-related components, provides transmission controllers to a major original equipment manufacturer (OEM). It needed to begin designing its products in the United States rather than offshoring to Japan per the OEM’s request.

In order to meet this request, the customer needed outside support to help establish a core team of talent, provide flexibility and engineering bandwidth. Space limitations and access to talent were major concerns as the customer sought a solution to support all levels of the software development lifecycle, including AUTOSAR-based board support packages for transmission control modules.

The EASi solution
We engaged our dedicated practices team, which provides continued solutioning support to assess performance and assist with new problems, to serve as technical/process experts as the engagement and each project was set up. Our experts advised the customer that involving us in the architecture/design phase would streamline development and testing phase, improving efficiency, quality and time to completion.

To address space constraints, we established an embedded systems lab in our Troy, Mich., delivery center to perform software architecture and design. Development and testing was also completed in the Troy lab, as well as at one of our India delivery center to drive cost efficiency and productivity.

This enables us to provide full life cycle software product development support to our customer, including:

This delivery model and workflow extends our customer’s engineering organization, provides deliverable management and coordination of configuration management and tools and removes non-core functions from the customer’s managers to extend managerial bandwidth.

The results
EASI provided the customer with a quick ramp-up and customized onboarding processes to create an extended engineering team with varying experience in the automotive industry.

Through a collaborative project initiation, planning and execution process, EASi has developed a strong partnership with our customer’s managers. EASi has played a key role in helping build our customer’s U.S.-based team for future OEM engagements by establishing an effective onboarding process and additional work space in an optimal location for its end clients. By providing an end-to-end solution, we also are able to offer the customer suggestions for process improvements, ensuring that our delivery model is consistently evaluated and aligned with the customer’s changing business.

Our project was organized into a milestone-based schedule so the customer could deliver quality products to its end client. Over five milestone events, we delivered architecture, design, software code and testing files for the transmission controllers our customer supplied to this OEM. According to our customer’s engineering manager: “Of all the contract firms we have worked with, we have found EASi to be the most flexible and able to adjust to changing environments as we learn to execute together.” In the future, our model is established to support next-generation and cyber security support projects.
