EASi Supports Client with AS9100D Quality Certification Support

EASi helps a space-technology firm complete its AS9100D certification to ensure its continued eligibility as a supplier for key clients.

The client and challenge
The client, a space-technology firm that primarily designs and manufactures avionics and sensor systems, needed to complete its AS9100D certification to ensure its continued eligibility as a supplier for key clients in the commercial, civil and defense markets. However, limited technical capacity and a lack of expertise around this standard required the customer to seek an outsourced solution to complete the project on schedule.

The EASi solution
AS9100D certification requires a robust quality system to be in place for design, development, production, installation and servicing operations. The AS9100D standard is based on ISO 9001 and is supplemented by the aerospace industry to satisfy DoD, NASA and FAA requirements.

EASi maintains an Integrated Quality System (IQS) through our Global Quality Office (GQO) to incorporate the most relevant aspects of ISO 9001 for engineering services, ISO 14001 for environmental and OHSAS 18001 for safety into our solutions. EASi’s GQO is led by subject matter experts in quality engineering and can provide project-based planning, oversight, management and close-out support for quality certification projects.

To complete the customer’s AS9100D certification on schedule, EASi developed a multi-phased solution to assess the customer’s current operation, determine the necessary updates, complete implementation activities and provide guidance as the customer worked towards certification. We deployed an on-site quality consultant and provided management oversight/guidance from our GQO. We worked closely with our customer during initiation to properly scope the engagement, conduct a gap analysis and develop a comprehensive plan for gap closure.

Once a plan was established, EASi’s on-site consultant executed quality engineering requirements with the customer’s teams while EASi’s GQO ensured that all work met established standards; monitored and evaluated processes; and provided direction throughout the necessary project activities and milestones to reach certification.

During this engagement, EASi:
  • Conducted a gap analysis to assess existing business practices against AS9100D quality system standards.
  • Directed, consulted and provided solutions to the customer to close identified gaps and meet all AS9100D requirements, including presenting options for compliance and ongoing sustenance.
  • Assisted with the selection of a Quality System Registrar to maintain and service the quality management system and issue ongoing compliance and certification following the initial certification.
  • Supported on-site registration and surveillance audits as needed in support of process re-engineering and improvement engineering.
  • Conducted a formal management review to familiarize customer staff with ongoing compliance requirements, as well as individual management team discussions to ensure understanding.
  • Hosted periodic status meetings to drive productivity, cooperation, visibility and adherence with project schedules.
  • Provided consultation as needed to ensure the customer was prepared to maintain AS9100D certification once achieved.

The results
With EASi’s support, the customer successfully completed certification requirements and received its AS9100D certificate within its required timelines.
