EASi helped a boat manufacturer meet its production deadlines by performing harness design, engineering changes and overall product engineering support services in a timely and cost-effective way.
The client and challenge
The client is a premier manufacturer of dash assemblies and wiring harnesses, primarily for boat manufacturers. During its busy season, the manufacturer’s small engineering team becomes stretched thin with a high volume of product update requests, such as updating gauges or displays and standardizing components. To complete these updates in a timely and cost-efficient manner and ensure product information is updated for manufacturing, our client needed to scale its engineering capacity to perform harness design, engineering changes and overall product engineering support services.
The EASi solution
EASi provided a blended delivery model that includes:
Our program supplements the customer’s internal engineering team by making and documenting product changes and then updating the customer’s enterprise resource planning (ERP) system.
When the customer receives change requests, it sends the drawings and change requirements to EASi. EASi then updates the drawings and documents changes per the customer’s internal revision/change management process. To ensure products are ready for manufacturing, EASi then processes a formal engineering change notice (ECN) to the bill of materials (BOM) in Macola, the customer’s ERP system. The customer then reviews the ECN and approves it to become the as-built.
To ensure timely delivery and maximize engineering capacity, EASi leverages an offshore team. The customer sends work packages to EASi by close of business in the U.S. and our domestic team farms them out to our offshore team. EASi’s India team completes work requirements and has them ready for our U.S.-based team and the customer by the following business day. EASi’s domestic project lead ensures the quality of all deliverables for the customer.
In addition, EASi is helping drive continuous improvement for the customer by researching and developing automated solutions for BOM generation to mitigate data entry and integrity issues. EASi determined the feasibility of converting drawings to electrical packages that flowed directly into Macola using AutoCAD Electrical. We verified the necessary functionality and are building a symbol library to capture part data. When complete, the customer will be able to complete work faster and with greater accuracy.
By extending engineering capacity during peak season via concurrent development with our offshore team in India, EASi completed 344 work packages/product updates over four months, alleviating 1,173 hours of work from the customer’s internal team. Deliverables of our program include CAD files, audit check sheets and cover sheets. Electrical drawings include 2D and 3D harness drawings and BOMs are created using AutoCAD.
EASi’s support of the customer’s continuous improvement efforts has enabled the customer to improve work velocity and output quality while sparing its internal team from having to make software or time investments until a complete solution is developed.
