EASi Helps OEM Improve Tire Design for Increased Crash Safety

EASi provides technical expertise to help a manufacturer create a tire that significantly decreases the risk of serious leg and foot injuries in front-end crashes. 

The client and challenge
Our client is one of the top automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in the U.S. Certain car crashes force the front wheel back into the footwell, resulting in serious leg and foot injuries. To address this, a new National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) regulation requires automakers to modify the front wheel. Our client needed help to establish a process to model this new wheel using MATLAB. Since this approach is the first of its kind, no prior reference techniques or tools were available in the market.

The EASi solution
EASi developed a code in MATLAB to create detailed models of the wheel that could capture aftereffects of impact, with an automation process that took into account solver (LsDyna & Radioss) compatibility and robustness. The code was developed to be interactive to model complexities of design variables with minimal inputs from user.

The results
The tire model developed through EASi’s approach was validated with physical tests and correlated with test results and reports, allowing the client to fulfill the NHTSA requirement and enhance safety in their vehicles.
