The position falls within the Telecommunications Department of the organization. The engineer will work with senior level engineers to learn how to provide RTU related input for preparing P&C scopes, design support and cost estimates for electric substation projects. They will prepare and/or review RTU configurations and RTU Point Assignment (RPA) lists for electrical substation projects. They will work with in-house and client engineers and designers.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Participate in RTU configuration activities for 4kV through 765KV electrical substation projects.
  • Provide RTU related input for preparing P&C scopes, design support and cost estimates for electric substation projects.
  • Prepare and/or review RTU configurations and RTU Point Assignment (RPA) lists for electrical substation projects.
  • Participate in project scheduling, resource planning, and cost control for assigned projects.
  • Provide project engineering support for RTU installation, commissioning, checkout and troubleshooting.
  • Review and approve RTU related work of other team members.
  • Review, evaluate and provide SCADA related comments and recommendations on transmission and distribution planning proposals.
  • Coordinate with transmission customers and interconnected companies on associated SCADA and RTU issues.
  • Maintain awareness of NERC requirements related to SCADA and RTU architecture, physical and electronic station security.
  • Contribute to development of system-wide protection and SCADA standards for transmission and distribution station protection, metering and control applications.
  • Provide general SCADA and RTU technical support, as needed, including the technical interfaces with P&C SCADA Standards, Telecomm, Operations, Transmission Region Operations, Station Engineering, Transmission Planning and Project Management.
  • Work under supervision of SCADA Engineers II, III, IV, Senior Engineers, and Principal Engineers
  • Position requires 10-15% travel to field substations


Education and Experience Requirements
  • Zero to two years of experience in substation SCADA application, design and engineering for HV and EHV electrical substation projects (for higher level classifications) and familiarity with relay protection, metering and control.
  • Zero to two years of experience with Local Area Network (LAN) communication system
  • Zero to two years of experience with DNP and Modbus Protocols
  • Zero to two years of experience with GE D20 (Westronic) RTU (Remote Terminal Unit) programing and Cooper RTU programing
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET)
  • Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET) will count toward years of experience
  • An EIT License is desirable but not required


Requisite Abilities and Skills
  • Familiarity with standards and codes such as IEEE, ANSI, NEC, and NESC
  • Strong written and verbal communication
  • Demonstrate ability to work with others in supplying information and seeking assistance as necessary
  • Demonstrate willingness and capabilities to assume leadership roles
